Radio (Dual Language Program) - Tamil

Leading The Way's dual-language broadcasts feature Michael Youssef's Gospel messages in English, which are translated phrase by phrase into one of 20 languages reaching some 115 countries. Many listeners tune in to learn English — and, as a result, hear the Gospel.

Leading The Way's Tamil broadcast began October 29, 2006. The English-Tamil dual-language program airs from Sri Lanka. The broadcast reaches India's state of Tamil Nadu, which is located on the country's southern tip.

Tamil is the 16th translated language in Leading The Way's dual-language program. One of the world's oldest languages, Tamil is an official language of India, primarily spoken in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu as well as in parts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh — all in the southernmost third of the country. An official language of Singapore and Sri Lanka as well, Tamil also is spoken in Malaysia, Mauritius, Singapore, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, and in emigrant communities across the globe. An estimated 65 million people speak Tamil, one of the world's top 20 spoken languages.

The oldest living language in India, Tamil is a Dravidian language and also is considered to be a source for other languages in the Dravidian family. Tamil is rich in its literature as well as its history. Despite the use of foreign words used at different periods of time for various reasons, the Tamil language has retained its individuality. In fact, according to a report published on the Web site tamilar.org, among the living languages of India, "it is the Tamil language which has the least number of foreign loan words."

The same report states that the Tamil area in India is a center of traditional Hinduism. "Although the present-day Tamil are mostly Hindus," the report indicates, "there are Christians, Muslims, and Jains among them."
